LYRICS:

CUMBERLAND GAP

B-b-b-bouncing though the Cumberland Gap on the back of a slow train
It seems like we been bouncing up and down the better part of the day
Betsy's got her ears pointed straight toward Tennessee
I'm chugging on a jug o' my five-star Hennessy
Can't remember when it was that I left PA

And we were rolling, rolling
Rolling down and I'm feeling fine
Trying to get to Memphis on the Mobile Line

Now, yesterday, I wondered when it was that I'd be leaving the city
Tomorrow me and Betsy will be gliding on the side of the sun
I got a piece of paper with the name of a man to see
My mind is occupied with a Bluegrass fantasy
Can't remember when it was that I left PA

And when the music of the train is playing
Louder and louder I don't mind
I hear the voice of the track keep saying to me over and over
"I got time. I got time. I got time."

In the morning, mooning a mournful tune on the guitar
Tonight we might be sleeping in a Tennessee ton of hay
My gal and I have had a lot of times we smiled about
Smiling with a lady is a smile I'm wild about
Can't remember when it was that I left PA

LOVING YOU CAN NEVER REALLY CHANGE

If I start where I am, right here
I can be anyone I'm near
Simply by letting go
That's all you need to know
But you start calling
And old friends are falling
And I don't understand
If it's all make believe or true
But when I put my arms around you
Loving you can never really change

Another night up past three
That's the way it's been a lot around here lately
I know you're not so far away
But I couldn't talk to you anyway
'Cause I'd start sinking
And you'd be thinking
That I don't understand
If it's all make believe or true
But when I put my thoughts around you
Loving you can never really change

What can I sing to you
That will dwell in your eyes?
A melody can hold so true
When words only turn into lies

So I say once again to you
I know you'll do what you need to
But don't let me fade away
I don't believe in yesterday
And I can't help feeling
That we've let something real slip by
We could regain
Let it be make believe or true
But when I put my Self around you
Loving you can never really change

LEAVING YOU

I guess I should just say, "Thank you," shake your hand and move along
Like leaving a long and lovely party long before the guests have come
It wouldn't help to ask you why I'm leaving while the lights are high
It only helps to wonder how I'm leaving now

I never know what to say to you til it's too late to and then I think
Love is a fast square dance you can't think twice or even stop to blink
Oh, but a time like this could really set you on your living end
That's when I stop and wonder how I'm leaving now
Oh, how could I be leaving you

You gotta get off your seat
Get on your feet
Get it on the street and you know you'll beat that feeling

Some of the good things I remember, some of the times when I'm solo
Like stepping out wet from ice-cold showers wearing only peppermint glow
Flying across the tracks to hold you while the trains were coming through
These are the things that wonder how I'm leaving now
Oh, how could I be leaving you

ONE MORE CHANCE

I'm only gonna give you one more chance little darling
To tell your Picassos from your Renoirs
Only gonna give you two more chances, minus one
I don't want no wife of mine being looked down
Off of someone's turned up nose at
What're they gonna think of us at the Sunday Art Show Auction, hon?

Ever since we moved into this town you been hitting all them hot spots
Getting into gin and sin and degradation
Well, I don't care whatcha do witcha own time
Baby, all I'm saying is, "Let me add this pearl of wisdom to your education"

Now hanging on the living room wall
Is a watercolor done by Warhol
He's a hip, up-to-the-minute voice of the Pop Art Culture
But you don't seem to pay him no mind
Ignoring this and that like you was blind
Would you please not hang your hat on that there Rodin sculpture

Now don't start getting upset, yet
At least the neighbors haven't seen the way you're hooked to the TV screen

Well, I done the best I could
I even bought you Betty Crocker Recipes
But they haven't even made it to the kitchen
I thought you might learn some culinary art
Like going through my stomach to reach my heart
But what you haven't learned is big enough to dig a ditch in

IMAGINATION

There's a man who jumps up saying out loud
That part of his life is through
So he goes to a hill and he sits very still
'Cause he knows he's got something to do

Then he shifts his gaze past the inner maze
That's just at the edge of your eye
And he looks very far til he sees a Blue Star
And he knows he'll give it a try

Now a tune floats by
And he doesn't know why
But it captures his imaging eye
And he follows it up, so high

Up and down and all around, is it my imagination?
Is it my imagination?

Then he comes upon a scene that's fertile and green
Where a babbling brook runs by
He feels quite clear, there is nothing to fear
There's a good friend standing by

Well, there's much to see, many places to be
But he knows that he's done for awhile
Now he's back on the hill where he sat very still
In his eye there's a tear and a smile

THE BODY IS BLIND

The Body is blind and so is the mind
The brain is not the thinker of the thought
The organs of sense they are just as dense
But put a soul inside it all comes alive

Let me tell you 'bout a thing I learned
I took a look inside
At what's doing the looking and the cooking
And the thinking and the blinking those eyes
Well, if the body is just a clay shell
Then there must be something else inside that makes it work so well

I got a body on the physical plane
I got a body on the astral plane
I got a body on the causal plane
I got a body on the mental plane
Well, if the body is just a clay shell
Then there must be something else inside that makes it work so well

So if I tell you that your body is dead
Please do not cry
It just depends on the part of yourself with which you identify
And if you treat all your bodies with love
They will be in harmony like a hand in a glove

For the soul is the longer for the light, the seer of the sight
The tyer of the knot, the thinker of the thought
The weigher of the pound, the hearer of the sound
The planter of the seed, the puller of the weed
The lover of the life, the kisser of the wife
The drinker of the juice, the singer of the blues

The Body is blind and so is the mind
The brain is not the thinker of the thought
The organs of sense they are just as dense
But put a soul inside it all comes alive

$1.30

This morning with no warning
I woke up in the gutter I was born in
I found a dollar-thirty cents in change and a toothless comb
A dollar-thirty today
Don't make me any different than yesterday
A dollar-thirty today that's all I own

What can I try to buy
Maybe a jumbo mocha java or a coupla hunksa pie
Ah, but Rosie don't open up shop til eleven AM
A cup of custard or a bun
I wish I had a sweet talking honey to take me home
A dollar-thirty today is all I own

I've got a sore throat
I got my coat stole'
And a half finished bottle of Coca Col'
But that's all -- that's all
I got a stoned head
I got no bread
And a coupla achin' dogs getting sore and red
I got the Tuesday Daily News stuffed in my shoes
A dollar-thirty today
Don't make me any different than yesterday
A dollar-thirty today that's all I own

I got blisters on my toes, my extremities are froze
And the cops that pound my beat ain't nothing but dirty so-and-sos
A dollar-thirty ain't even enough for me to go nowhere
But there ain't nowhere for me to go anyway
So why should I care

Mean ol' Monday morning woke up with the chills
A hocker hit me on the head from a buncha three dollar bills
A dollar-thirty ain't even enough for me to go nowhere
But there ain't nowhere for me to go anyway
So why should I care

This old city
It don't do me
Half of the good of the bad it's doing to me
All my friends on the Upper East Side forgot to phone
I'm going down, down, down to Chinatown
For a dollar you can fill yourself up with a pound o' brown
A dollar-thirty today that's all I own

RED TENNIS SHOES

As I recall, New York City never felt so bad
Til the day you left it standing there in the rain
And I watched you disappear down a subway hole
We bought you some tennis shoes
We bought you some new red tennis shoes
We bought you a pair of new red tennis shoes
To go camping in

I remember it now, it was the weekend that I thought you died
The weather was rough and the mountains hurricaned
And I told you not to take your new guitar
It was the first time I ever cried
It was the very first time I ever cried
The first time I ever cried with my whole life

Oh, and the boys were moving away that day
Away from 'hundred-second and old Broadway
And then I went to see a lady about a bass
I thought I caught a glimpse of you in her face

So I pined all day and I made up a tune for your funeral
Now something like that for me to do was insane
'Cause I didn't think I'd go to it anyway
And I think I was glad that you died that day
Something in me was glad that you died that way
I was secretly glad that you were dead
I was such a martyr

Then I even gave a call to your old boyfriend
Just to tell him
That I thought it was the end of you
And I scared him too
But then you called and said to meet you at the subway hole
I sang and danced while I waited for you
I could only sing and dance for a minute or two
I was singing and dancing while I watched for you
'Cause I love you

DARK ENCHANTED FOREST

I wanna be the eternal giver
Wanna pour my life into the river flowing
Soul is knowing
I wanna light the life everlasting
'Stead of this fasting, feasting, fasting!
I'll know when I do
'Cause I'll be singing' this song and you can sing it too

Oh let me be
Let me go back to the dark enchanted forest
Where the cold stream borders the silent side of town
Town is where you found that you're your own false-hearted lover
Baby, don't go downtown
Baby's gone so downtown

And as I tunnel through the Rock of Ages
Memories passing by like pages showing
The lifetimes growing
I wanna light the life everlasting
'Stead of this fasting, feasting, fasting!
I'll know when I do
'Cause I'll be singing and you can sing it too

Oh let me be
Let me go back to the dark enchanted forest
Where the cold stream borders the silent side of town
Town is where you found that you're your own false-hearted lover
Baby, don't go downtown
Baby's gone so downtown

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Place yourself by the window
Feel the sound surrounding you
Wait with great expectations
Singing HU*

Like a lantern leads you in the dark
Through the endless night
Imagination truly is the spark
Every soul must light
Singing HU will pave the way
As you will make your way through

Great adventure waits for you within
It is up to you
When your inner journey will begin
With a single HU
Singing HU will pave the way
As you will make your way through

No one else but you can set you free
Or tell you when to start
And a helping hand will always be
Closer than your heartbeat
Singing HU will pave the way
As you will make your way through

*HU is an ancient name for God that when sung or chanted in contemplation or in times of spiritual need, aids in contacting the Light and Sound of God.
